When Did the American Revolution Really Start?

from google images

During our next unit in social studies, we will be learning about the time period between 1750 and 1776.

I’d like you to read over this quote:

“The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.”

John Adams

During this week, after each social studies lesson, I’d like you to jot a few notes in the Evernote folder called Revolution about what you learned in class and how it relates to Adam’s quote.  Then, on Thursday night, please write a response to this blog about what do you think Adams was talking about.

  1. I think John Adam’s quote meant that before the war had even started there was still havoc going on. I think that in the beginning of his quote he meant the taxes were in the Revolution. So I think that the taxes started a war.

  2. I think that John Adams was talking about how people caused the war. People caused the war by making people give away their goods to other people, which made the people that had to give away their goods, poor. People also caused the war by taxing colonists. People did a lot of things, which led to war. I also think that John Adams was also talking about how people caused the war themselves. As the poem said, “The revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. I also think that John Adams was also talking about how everything changed after the war. People died, people grew angry, and the more angry people got the more wars people had. I think that John Adams is very right about his thoughts. I agree with him more than he might agree with himself.

  3. I think John Adams was saying that people were still angered at the British before the war because they were taxing the colonists. The colonists were talking about war when the British started taxing them. They were so mad at the British that they started war even though they were angry before the war.

  4. I think that what John Adams meant when he said this was that the Revolutionary War wan’t just a war, it was a hope for freedom “in the hearts and minds of the people” he said. The people wanted something so badly and they believed in it in their hearts and minds that they were willing to risk their lives to get it. They believed that their country was more than just a place for the British to make money and to tax, they believed that it was a place of freedom and happiness.

  5. I think that John Adams meant that the war wasn’t the Revolution, it was the way the people living in America changed, like he said: ”The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. ”. To begin with, the big taxations started right after the French and Indian war, not during the Revolutionary War at all. All of the Intolerable Acts were starting to change people’s lives in the colonies, for a long time up until the war. The change was huge for the Americans, ” This radical change… ” Also, the ways the English had started to try and control the colonies, was unlike the freedom they had before. The colonists (especially in the colonies that were self-governing) were furious about having decisions made for them. They had to adapt to the way the English wanted to run them. This made them terribly angry, and this was when the riots started, and the Patriot leaders started to take charge. Additionally, the way the Patriots changed peoples lives has to do with the part of the quote: ”…change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.” This means that the change of thought about America’s freedom was what got them their own country, not the war that they had to fight. Like Adams said, the way the people changed and took action, was the real Revolution.

  6. I think that John Adam’s quote meant that the war wasn’t really the revolution. To start off with, the taxes were all before the Revolutionary War. All the taxes were horrible, basically the colonists now had no freedom. All of this taxation lead to riots. If only the England hadn’t inforced new laws everything would have been fine. These taxes made a huge change in peoples lives and in the country. Secondly, thety way people took action an ddefense made a difference. After the taxes, angry colonists started riots. Like Adams said,”This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.”. Lastly, the colonists had no freedom. “The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.” England, because all of taxes, kind of didn’t give the colonists any rights. So after all there was basically no reason to move to America. They could have stayed in England and avoided all of this. But of course, that was not what happened. I totally agree with John Adam on his quote.

    • I really agree with you and I like how you described it, like “All the taxes were horrible, basically the colonists now had no freedom.” Good job! 🙂

  8. I think that John Adams quote was saying that some of the colonists were already outraged by the British laws and taxes. Also the colonists already had a hard time surviving and the British taxes and laws made it even harder, and the reason they were taxing is because they supplied the colonists with solders that the colonists didn’t even want. Also some of the colonists had moved to the Americas to get away from the British, and then the British came to down on them even harder than at England, but away from the king so they could not complain.

  9. When John Adams said: “The Revolution was effected before the war commenced.” I think he meant that people were definitely affected by the tax and many other things too. Then when he said: “The Revolution was in the hearts and minds of the people” He meant that people weren’t just fighting the war, they were living it. And finally, when he said: “This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.” I think he meant that the fighting was just one part of the Revolution. And that the real part was it being in “the hearts and minds of the people.”

  10. I think this quote that John Adams said was completely true. First of all, if you look at things like the Boston massacre, and the Boston tea party, they were all had the spirit of revolution in their hearts and minds, by throwing all that tea off those boats. They had thought i’m going to rebel (meaning like a revolution,) against British because there mean and tax us to much. Because of this fact, many colonists got killed and slaughtered, for just this very reason. Another reason I say this, is because even the most normal people, would rise up against the british. Not only did some crazy kids rise up against the British, but almost every single person was rising up. The rich, poor, everybody was against the British, not only some crazy protesters. This is shown from all the cartoons, pictures, and harassing the tax collectors. This all shown how everybody was against the British. These are the reasons why John Adams quote was true.

  11. I think John Adams was talking about the Stamp act and all the other acts and taxes that the British government had started when he said that the revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people . The taxes themselves were horrible and the colonists even had to pay for putting stamps on playing cards, I think that making playing cards have taxes is going way too far. All the taxes angered the colonists and citizens of Britain which eventually lead to riots on the streets. The quartering act really made the colonists mad because the colonists were literally forced to let British soldiers that they did not even know to be able to treat the colonists house like their own house. I would not want some random soldier invading into my house and pretending it is his. All of these tax actions that the British took were the actual revolution because the taxes were effecting the minds and hearts of the people as John Adams had written in his quote.

  12. I think that John Adams was talking about the Revolutionary War before it started and how it was effecting peoples lives. He was talking about people who were looking for a new life and more freedom from the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, the Townsend Act and others. Also, another thing that might have started the war was that the very poor had to give away their food to the English soldiers and provide living expenses for them. The colonist did not think this was fair. Another reason the Revolutionary War started was over taxes without representation. I think it was hardest for the colonists because the English were bossing the colonists and the colonists were not use to that. I agree with the quote all the way. Adams was trying to show the message in a serious and positive way.

  13. What I think he meant was that there was still violence and bad feeling going on before the start of the war. When he said that “The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people”, he meant that all the people were involved in the war, and that they all cared about the outcome greatly. That also may have meant that the people were also hating the acts that were passed, like the Stamp and Townsend acts. In the last line, he may have meant that these laws that were passed were the real way that the revolutionary war came to be. But I would be pretty mad if some random guys came into my house, or if I had to get a stamp to get playing cards.

  14. “The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments and affections of the people was the real American Revolution.”
    John Adams
With this quote, I think that it means that people were fighting before the Revolution even started. Maybe everyone was preparing themselves for the war before it began. Everyone was getting all ingredients to a great war. They could of gotten things like gun powder, better quality bullets or just better amour. That is what I think John Adams means by this quote.

  15. The main part of the quote by John Adams, “The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people,” didn’t make much sense to me when Mrs. E showed it to us at the beginning of the week. After doing research, it makes more sense. This week we learned about the Acts (taxes) that were so that the British could get money, like the Stamp Act, the Sugar Act, and the Quartering Act. The Stamp Act must have been annoying to have to buy stamps for everything, even playing cards. The Sugar Act made sugar and molasses more expensive. The Quartering Act said that you had to give British soldiers a home and feed them when they were in your area. All this must have made the colonists very mad, so now I’ll get back to the question. Making the colonists mad started the Revolution, as far as I can tell, and the colonists were mad because of the taxes. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people, because they were getting annoyed about the taxes. I think John Adams was just saying that the Revolution was the colonist’s feelings, which did start before the war because the taxes started before the war. The Revolution was their anger, annoyance, and upset thoughts about the taxes and that’s also why the Boston Massacre happened.

  16. I think that John Adams believed that it wasn’t the war or America’s official independence that caused the revolution. He thinks that the real revolution started when people began to lose trust for the British government. He thought that the revolution happened when Britain started to enforce taxes on the colonists. Before then, the colonists were loyal to their mother country because they felt that they were treated well. But after the taxes began, colonists felt that they were being treated unfairly, as the only British citizens who were required to pay the taxes. An example of the colonists no longer wishing to be part of Britain was when they had riots, boycotts, protested and abused redcoats. And everything that happened after the taxes were passed (like the Boston Massacre), just made the colonists more certain that they no longer wished to be British citizens, which in the eyes of John Adams meant that the revolution had begun.

  17. I think that he meant that the people were still affected in some of the same ways before the actual revolution started. Some examples are the taxes that colonists had to pay for everyday things like sugar, stamps, and household things like paper, glass and paint. When the actual revolution started these things kept happening and some others did too. I do not fully agree with him because the revolution was the revolution and nothing is exactly like it. I had to read the quote a lot before I got it because to me at first it sounded like he was almost saying that the people knew what was headed their way much before it actually happened.

  18. I think that what John Adams was talking about was that the war wasn’t really the revolution. “The Revolution was affected before the war commenced.” First off, the when the people started to rise up against England because they were unhappy this was part of the revolution before the war. Also, the quote says, “The revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people.” The taxes were one way the colonists were unhappy with England. The colonists thought that those taxes were very unfair and that they weren’t being treated properly. The Boston Massacre was another one of those things that caused the revolution to be in their hearts and minds. One of the videos about the Boston Massacre said that the event was a turning point in the revolution. I completely agree with John Adams’s quote. I think that it shows that the revolution started in the minds of the colonists before the war.

  19. I think the revolution was on the minds of colonist because they moved to the new world to be free. they wanted to be free to practice there religion and to expand there farm land. They got mad when the british put taxes on everything the colonist loved like tea and sugar. This ended in having riots and protest. The colonist where already thinking of a revolution or a change in how things are done. They wanted to rule there own government not being ruled by the british.

  20. What I think Sam Adams means when he said that the Revolutionary War started before the fighting actually started was that the colonists had the Boston Tea Party, Maryland Burned Tea and made a doll who looked like the man that was holding all the stamps in a building and then burned that building and the doll. Also, I think Adams is talking about how all the colonists pretty much didn’t have freedom because the Brits were watching basically everything they did because the colonists had to let the solders from Great Britain stay in there houses. Additionally, the British wouldn’t let them move west to settle.

  21. I think John Adams was trying to stop people from being violent and just think about the consequences that they might face when they do make the wrong chose. But I also think John Adams was trying to point out something. I think he was trying to make people notice that there are many feeling in a person’s body. But one of them could shouldn’t be violence. And they are the only ones that can change that felling. Maybe John Adams was thinking something different then I was, but he probably didn’t want any violence involved. So that is what I think of John Adams poem.

  22. think that the revolutionary war started before the actual fighting it happened just after the french and Indian war after they imposed taxes . The colonists got mad and rioted troched buildings when men in concord stood up to British troops it was simply taking more intense action because after the quartering act and tea and sugar act the hearts and minds of the people saw the truth they where being taxed without representation and they where note going to get any so there only chose was to rebel .As John adams said the revolution started in the hearts and the minds of the people . Imangine being forced to use the moeny you eared slaving away in the fields the give food and shelter to sogier who get you in truble and eves drop on you or paying england taxs for the war they started. And being forced only to buy goods from england so they could sell goods at extreamly high prices and the fact that you must sell all of your goods to england . So I believe that the revlutionary war started in the hearts and minds of the people shoting the gun was there last option .

  23. I think that the quote “The Revolution was effected before the war commenced.” means people were affected in an angry way because of taxes and the Boston Massacre. “The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people.” because people were experiencing and thinking about fighting for freedom. The important part was in their minds thinking about it before it even started.
